Description
The Great Auk
Scientific Name: Pinguinus impennis
Size: 3.8 feet high
Location: Coasts of North Canada, Northeast U.S., and Western Europe
Food: Fish
When Last Seen: 1844
The most famous known auk is the extinct great auk (sometimes known as a garefowl). These were very large auks about the size of Antarctic penguins, but they could not fly. Their eggs were speckled, and like penguins, they lay a single egg. However, people considered the auk to become their best feast ever. Clubbing them to death and smashing their eggs were a serious threat to these birds.
